Arcadis are looking for experienced archaeologists to join our Cultural Heritage team based either in our Bristol or Stroud offices. We are offering a role as either are Principal or a Senior Archaeologist and are willing to consider candidates with experience at either position. The successful candidate will be joining our small but busy Cultural Heritage team within the Arcadis Environment Planning group. As a Senior or Principal Archaeological Consultant with Arcadis you would working as part of multi-disciplinary teams with a range of other environmental specialists and supported by our excellent EIA co-ordination team. Much of the work that our team produces is EIA based and we also work on a number of Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects that follow the DCO consenting route. Some examples of the types of projects we are currently involved in include large scale infrastructure projects with complex and exciting Historic Environment requirements, renewable energy and flood alleviation schemes for both private and public clients, and major transport projects including road schemes where we provide specialist heritage advice to both Highways England and the Welsh Government.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The main duties of the Senior Archaeologist include, but are not limited to:

  • Production of desk-based assessments, Environmental Statement chapters, heritage impact assessments and other documents
  • Developing archaeological mitigation strategies
  • Project Management - all aspects including technical, quality, commercial and health and safety
  • Engagement with clients, consultees and stakeholders
  • Provision of heritage advise to clients, project managers and colleagues
  • Engage and manage archaeological sub-contractors to carry out archaeological fieldwork
  • Producing tenders
  • Providing support and training to junior team members

In addition the Principal Archaeologist role will include:

  • Project Management of medium to large sized projects: all aspects
  • Manage the production of tenders, including for large scale projects
  • Provide advice on archaeological issues, at an in-depth level within own area of expertise, but also on a broad range of issues
  • Provide training at staff meetings when required, and to smaller groups of staff
  • Contribute to the development of best practice with respect to training and survey standards
  • Provide support to the team leader in the promotion of the Arcadis Cultural Heritage team both within Arcadis and externally

Role Requirements:


  • Relevant first degree
  • Experience of working in archaeological consultancy or a comparable role in the heritage sector
  • Wide-ranging knowledge of the Historic Environment
  • Knowledge and experience of GIS
  • Detailed knowledge of UK Heritage legislation and planning policy
  • Demonstrable experience of producing Desk-based Assessments, Environmental Statements and Heritage Impact Assessments (For Principal role more in depth experience/larger scale/more complex project experience is expected)
  • Commercial awareness and experience of tendering
  • Project management experience


  • A second degree in relevant field
  • Associate (Senior role) or Full Membership (Principal role) of the CIfA or in the process of up-grading
  • First Aider
  • CSCS card holder
  • Experience of working on Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects
