The Graduate School "Human Development in Landscapes" at the Christian
Albrechts-University in Kiel, Germany, has available for immediate
occupation two PhD positions. Applications are invited of outstanding
young researchers who will, with their research, contribute to the newly
started DFG Priority Program 1400 "Early Monumentality and social
differentiation" on the topics
2 PhD positions
1: Improving chronologies based on radiocarbon dating of bones:
Isotopic indications of reservoir age and diet
2: Mid Holocene climate variability in northern Germany and adjacent
ocean
Project 1 aims to quantify the influence of diet on the 14C
concentration of human and animal bones and thus on the 14C ages
obtained from these bones ("reservoir age") and to develop independent
criteria by which diet and reservoir age may be estimated based on the
relative abundance of stable C and N isotopes. It is based in the
Leibniz Laboratory for Radiomentric Dating and Isotope Research

Project 2 aims to connect climate variability as documented in (marine
and lacustrine) sediment cores with human- and landscape development in
northern Germany spanning funnel beaker times. The Phd candidate will
establish decadal-to-centennial scale time series of climate variables
based on stable isotope and Mg/Ca records of microfossils and on XRF
records. The project is jointly based in the Institute of Geosciences
and in the Institute of Pre- and Protohistoric Archaeology. Further

Eligible candidates must hold a university degree in a field relevant to
the themes (e.g. physics, (bio)chemistry, biology, archaeology for the
bone project; geology, geography, archaeology for the climate project).
They will enter the multidisciplinary graduate program of the Graduate
School "Human Development in Landscapes", jointly offered by the
faculties of Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Medicine,
Agriculture and Nutrition Sciences. (further information:

and PhD students of other projects of SPP 1400. The orientation of the
PhD projects is strongly interdisciplinary, and supervision will
accordingly be provided at an interfaculty level. Grants of 1200 Euro
per month for living expenses will be provided for two years with a
probable extension for a third year.
