PhD-position (w/m) on Georesources and cultural heritage / Archaeometry

The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) opens a PhD position (w/m) at the Department for Environment Constructions and Design (DACD), in Mendrisio, at the Institute of materials and construction (IMC), one full time time position for Ph.D.-position with research activity in the area of Georesources and cultural heritage / Archaeometry. Start date: January 2022.


PhD released at the Department of Geological Sciences of the University of Bern (UniBE). UniBE has a long-standing track record of hands-on PhD student education paired with excellent infrastructure and international research impact.

The successful applicant will carry out the research activity within the project "Forgotten colours - Rediscovering the original polychromy of early medieval wall paintings in the Raetia Curiensis region", financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (FNS), including:

  • Assistance and execution of non-invasive in-situ campaign (digital microscopic documentation, HH-XRF, FORS, Colourimetry, p-FTIR, and (surface) multi-spectral imaging (MSI) techniques including Vis, IR, UV and VIL on early medieval wall paintings and archaeological painted plasters.
  • Execution of micro-stratigraphic painting analysis (PLM, SEM/EDX, µ-Raman, XRD).
  • Provenance studies (Pb-isotope-analysis, LA-ICP-MS) and reconstruction of the technological processes of artificial pigment production.
  • Assistance to the assessment and documentation of the state of conservation of wall paintings.
  • Elaboration and interpretation of the scientific data.
  • Scientific data management.
  • Preparation of scientific publications.


  • Academic degree in Geosciences (MSc or equivalent).
  • Strong interest in Archaeometry and Archaeological Sciences.
  • Experience with analytical techniques, especially in microscopic and spectroscopic techniques is highly recommended.
  • Collaborative behavior to enable and facilitate the work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent English language is required. The knowledge of Italian and/or German languages is desirable.
