UCL Department / Division:
Institute of Archaeology
Specific unit / Sub department:
£18,212 - £19,828 per annum.
Duties and Responsibilities
Operating out of offices in East Sussex, Essex and London Archaeology South-East (the Field Unit of the Institute of Archaeology, UCL) requires short-contract staff to work on excavations in southern England.
Work opportunities can arise at very short notice, and we currently have in place a number of tenders, which if successful mean that we will require Assistant Archaeologists at short notice. Therefore, we are looking for expressions of interest from suitably experienced/qualified Assistant Archaeologists whom we can contact as and when circumstances require.
Successful applicants will be required to excavate and record archaeological features and deposits and/or to undertake finds-processing duties.
Applicants should be competent at general excavation and recording techniques, with a sound understanding of the principles of archaeological stratification, and have a careful and methodical approach to work. Ideally the applicant will have a degree in archaeology (or closely related topic). Membership of Institute for Archaeologists (IFA) at Practitioner (PIFA) or Affiliate level is desirable. A working knowledge of at least some period(s) of British archaeology is essential as is proven experience of archaeological fieldwork. Ideally this builds on previous professional employment in UK (or equivalent) contract archaeology.
A job description and person specification can be accessed at the bottom of this page. To apply for the vacancy please click on the 'Apply Now' button below.

N.B. Field projects may require periods away from home, for which accommodation will normally be provided
