The ERICON (European Polar Research Icebreaker Consortium) - AURORA BOREALIS project will generate the strategic, legal, financial and organizational frameworks required from national governments and the European Commission to commit financial resources to the construction and operation of the European Polar Research Icebreaker AURORA BOREALIS. The ERICON - AURORA BOREALIS comprises sixteen partners from eleven European nations and associated countries.

The Position of the Communications Manager is directly linked to the "European Research Icebreaker Consortium Preparatory Phase", financed by the European Commission in Framework Program 7, the position is located at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association. The ERICON project is coordinated by the European Science Foundation and therefore the successful applicant will be expected to work in close association with the AWI and ESF ERICON Management teams.

The tasks of the Communications Manager comprise the strategic communication (target group analysis, corporate identity) of the entire project, management of national and international press relations, the internal and external information dissemination (including event management), the ongoing development and maintenance of the project's webpage (TYPO 3 experiences are beneficial), media development, presentation of the project in a national and international context, and the monitoring of new developments in science and science policy topics.

Required competences are a PhD (preferably in Marine Sciences, Geology, Polar or Climate Research) or equivalent research or working experience.

Additional professional experience in public outreach, communications or institutional governance is desired. Demonstrable skills in national/international science management are an asset. The successful applicant should be persuasive, have excellent communication skills and possess strategic thinking. Fluency in German is essential and expected together with a high standard of spoken and written English.

This full time position is offered for the duration of the project until 29 February 2012, preferably starting as soon as possible. The place of work is Bremerhaven, Germany. The position will involve some amount of national and international travel. The salary level will be based on experience and qualifications of the successful candidate and will follow the collective labour agreement for public services of the federal states (TV-L).

Rahmenprogramm der Europäischen Kommission, erarbeitet die von den nationalen Regierungen und der Kommission erforderlichen strategischen, organisatorischen, finanziellen sowie rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen, um finanzielle Ressourcen zum Bau und Betrieb des Europäischen Forschungseisbrechers AURORA BOREALIS bereitstellen zu können. Zum Projekt ERICON - AURORA BOREALIS gehören gegenwärtig sechzehn Partner aus elf europäischen Nationen und assoziierten Ländern. Die Position des Communications Managers ist direkt verbunden mit dem durch die Europäische Kommission finanzierten Projekt "European Research Icebreaker Consortium Preparatory Phase", ansässig am Alfred-Wegener-Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung in Bremerhaven.

Aufgaben: Die Stelle umfasst die strategische Kommunikation (Zielgruppenanalyse, Corporate Identity), die nationale und insbesondere internationale Pressearbeit, die interne und externe Öffentlichkeitsarbeit (Veranstaltungsmanagement), die Weiterentwicklung und Pflege der Projekt-Webpage (TYPO3 Kenntnisse sind von Vorteil), die Medienentwicklung, die Präsentation des Projektes im In- und Ausland, sowie die Beobachtung neuester Entwicklungen in wissenschaftlichen und wissenschaftspolitischen Themen.

Voraussetzungen: Mit Promotion oder mit vergleichbarer Qualifikation abgeschlossenes Hochschulstudium (vorzugsweise im Bereich der Polar oder Meeresforschung) sowie Berufserfahrung in der Wahrnehmung der geschilderten Aufgaben. Gewünscht sind weiterhin Erfahrungen im nationalen/internationalen Forschungsmanagement. Der/Die Bewerber/in sollte eine ausgeprägte Fähigkeit zum strategischen Denken, verbunden mit Kommunikationsfähigkeit, Überzeugungskraft und Kooperationsfähigkeit aufweisen. Die sehr gute Beherrschung der englischen Sprache in Wort und Schrift wird vorausgesetzt.

Die Stelle ist zunächst bis zum 29.02.2012 befristet. Das Arbeitsverhältnis richtet sich nach den Vorschriften des Tarifvertrages für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder (TV-L). Die Vergütung erfolgt je nach Qualifikation und Erfahrung.

Der Arbeitsort ist Bremerhaven und die Position erfordert nationale und internationale Reisetätigkeit.
