Institute of GeographyPhD position "Daily Weather Types over 250 years"The group of Climatology of the Institute of Geography, University of Bern, is offerig a PhD position in the framework of an interdisciplinary project on the solar influence on climate. The task of the successful candidate will be to produce a daily weather type classification for central Europe based on early instrumental data, to define comparable measures in climate model simulations, and to analyse both with respect to low-frequency changes and possible effects of changes in solar activity. The candidate should have a strong basis in climate physics (MSc in Atmospheric Physics, Geography, Geophysics, Environmental Sciences or similar), experience in handling large, gridded geophysical data sets (specifically climate model output or reanalyses) and proven skills in data processing (Fortran, MATLAB, IDL) and statistics (R or similar). The successful candidate will participate in the PhD programme of the Graduate School Climate Sciences, University of Bern, Switzerland (http://www.oeschger.unibe.ch). Good English language skills are a prerequisite. The position is for 36 months, the starting date is 1 Jan 2014.
