Ph.D. position in paleoclimate modeling
The paleoclimate modeling group at the Faculty of Geosciences, University of Bremen, has an opening for
a Ph.D. student. In the framework of the DFG Priority Programme SPP 1266 "Integrated Analysis of
Interglacial Climate Dynamics (INTERDYNAMIK)", the Ph.D. project aims at investigating variations in the
tropical hydrologic cycle during the past 20,000 years with a special focus towards the Atlantic-Pacific
water-vapour exchange. The successful candidate will carry out numerical simulations with a highresolution
version of the comprehensive global climate model CCSM in a parallel supercomputing
environment. The main objective of the work is to identify the role of atmospheric moisture transports in
regulating the oceanic thermohaline circulation. The project is a collaborative effort between the University
of Bremen and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (Massachusetts, USA).
Applicants should have a Diploma or M.Sc. in physics, physical oceanography, meteorology, geosciences
or a related discipline and enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team. Experience in
numerical modeling and scientific computation (UNIX/LINUX, FORTRAN) is mandatory. Strong
motivation, very good English language skills and a disposition to publish results in internationally relevant
journals are required. The Ph.D. training program includes special training courses as well as a research
stay at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
Salary will be according to the German civil service remuneration system TV-L 13 (66 %). The
appointment is initially for two years with possible extension to three years.
As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female employees in science, women
are particularly encouraged to apply.
In case of equal personal aptitudes and qualification, disabled persons will be given priority.
Complete applications will include a CV, a statement of research interests and accomplishments, and
names/addresses of two referees (all combined within a single PDF document). Applications and inquiries
should be directed under the reference number A208/09 by email to Dr. Matthias Prange
(mprange@marum.de).
Review of applications will begin January 31, 2010 and continue until the position
is filled.
