Postdoctoral Positions in Remote Sounding of Atmospheric Composition

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Postdoctoral Scholars Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in JPL's Microwave Atmospheric Science Group.

The research will involve the retrieval algorithms for the MLS experiment which convert raw radiance measurements into vertical profiles of atmospheric composition, temperature and cloud ice. In particular, the researchers will be working on improving MLS observations in the presence of clouds, and MLS observations of weakly-emitting species in the stratosphere. In addition there will be opportunities to participate in and/or lead scientific investigations using MLS data to advance our understanding of atmospheric composition and its links to climate and ozone layer stability. Dr. Nathaniel Livesey, in JPL's Microwave Atmospheric Science Group will serve as JPL postdoctoral advisor to the selected candidate. The appointee will be guided by the JPL advisor to ensure that the research work will result in publications in the open literature.

Candidates should have a recent Ph.D. in atmospheric science or a related field with a strong background in remote sounding. Experience in IDL and Fortran 95 is desirable. The appointment is contingent upon evidence of completion of a Ph.D. The annual starting salary for recent Ph.D. is US$52,000 and can vary somewhat according to the applicant's qualifications. Postdoctoral scholar's positions are awarded for a one-year period. Appointments may be renewed in one-year increments for a maximum addition of two years.

Please send a letter describing your research interests, a curriculum vitae, and a list of three references (with telephone numbers, postal and email address) to:
