Ph.D. position on land-ocean coupling between the Humboldt Current and Atacama palaeoclimate

The Group on Micropalaeontology and Palaeoecology at the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy at the University of Cologne invites applications for a PhD student position (3 years) to investigate land-ocean coupling between the Humboldt Current and paleoclimate in the Atacama Desert in Neogene.

You will have the opportunity to work as a researcher and to complete your Ph.D. within an international team of scientists of Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1211 "Earth-Evolution at the Dry Limit". In its second phase, CRC 1211 wants to deepen our understanding of the mutual evolutionary relationships between Earth surface processes and biota in (hyper-)arid desert systems, where both are severely limited by water availability (https://sfb1211.uni-koeln.de). The successful candidate will be a member of the CRC's Integrated Research Training Group, which aims at educating a generation of truly interdisciplinary doctoral candidates in the fields of Earth and Life Sciences, a combination of growing importance in the course of ongoing and accelerated global change.

Your tasks will include geological field work on marine surface outcrops in the Atacama Desert; the reconstruction of upwelling and ENSO behavior off northern Chile in the Mio-/Pliocene from mircopalaeontology (foraminifera) and shell geochemistry (stable isotopes, trace elements; foraminifera, mollusks); the integration of the results with terrestrial- and model-based palaeoclimate research in the Atacama Desert.

Your profile:

  • M.Sc. in Micropalaeontology, Palaeontology or a closely related field
  • Skills in foraminiferal taxonomy, statistical analyses and/or geochemistry of biogenic carbonates
  • Interest in paleoceanography and paleoclimatology
  • Experience with field-work
  • Good knowledge of English

The position is available from 01.01.2021 on a part time basis (75%). It is limited to three years. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector.

The University of Cologne promotes equal opportunities and diversity in its employment relations. Women are strongly encouraged to apply and given priority in accordance with the Equal Opportunities Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Landesgleichstellungsgesetz - LGG NRW). We explicitly welcome applications from individuals with severe disabilities or people of equivalent status. Severely disabled applicants of equal merit and qualifications will be given priority.

Please apply online at: https://jobportal.uni-koeln.de with proof of the sought qualifications. Your application should include a cover letter outlining your motivation and qualifications for the project, CV, copies of certificates, and letter(s) of reference. The reference number is Wiss2008-02.

If you have questions regarding the position do not hesitate to contact pgrunert@uni-koeln.de and/or jassin.petersen@uni-koeln.de.

The application deadline is 15.09.2020.
