2. About ECMWF *

ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. ECMWF carries out scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of its forecasts, collects and processes large amounts of observations, and manages a long-term archive of meteorological data. Satellite and in situ observations provide the information for up-to-date global analyses and climate reanalyses of the atmosphere, ocean and land surface.

3. Summary of the role

This new post is in the Web Operations Team in the Servers and Desktops Section of the Computer Department of ECMWF. The Web Operations Team is a small team of four personnel, responsible for all the technical aspects of both the internal and the external ECMWF websites.

The team provides 24x7 support for ECMWFs web services and its operational forecast web applications and products.

4. Main duties and key responsibilities

  • Providing support for web services
  • Participating in regular 24-hour on-call rotas for operational services
  • Maintaining existing web services, including web interfaces, web applications, web authoring tools, web platforms, databases and hardware infrastructure
  • Providing technical resources and guidance for the development of new web services, particularly related to backend web development and Linux system administration

6. Qualifications and experience required


  • A university degree or equivalent in a related discipline.


  • Ten years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience in designing and supporting web applications in an operational Linux environment.
  • Experience in web development within meteorology or other similar scientific disciplines would also be an advantage

Knowledge and skills

Demonstrable experience of most of the following is required:

  • Operating web services
  • Puppet or similar configuration management including building modules
  • Ops, Continuous Integration, Software Engineering, Automation
  • Cloud services and Scalability
  • Web Analytics (e.g. Splunk, New Relic)
  • Linux system administration (CentOS, SuSE) and shell scripting

A working knowledge in the following would be a distinct advantage:

  • Python, Ruby, PHP, Java, Perl, Django, Tomcat.
  • NOSQL (MongoDB), SQL (PostgreSQL or MySQL)
  • Service-oriented architecture (e.g. rabbitmq)
  • Geographic information systems and web mapping
  • VMware VSPHERE, Vagrant, Containers (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes)
  • GIT, Atlassian Bamboo
  • Web content management systems and their respective CLI tools

Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and interviews will be conducted in English.

A good knowledge of one of the Centre's other working languages (French or German) would be an advantage.

7. Other information

Grade remuneration

The successful candidate will be recruited at the A2 grade, according to the scales of the Co ordinated Organisations and the annual basic salary will be 56,487 net of tax. This position is assigned to the employment category STF-C as defined in the Staff Regulations.

Length of contract:Four years, with the possibility of a further contract.
