2. About ECMWF *

ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. ECMWF has been entrusted to operate the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) on behalf of the European Commission until the end of 2020. Copernicus is the European Union (EU) flagship Earth-observation programme. The programme ensures operational monitoring of the atmosphere, oceans, and continental surfaces, and will provide reliable, validated information services for a range of environmental and security applications.

3. Summary of the role

ECMWF is recruiting a Reanalysis Scientist for the C3S Reanalysis Team of the Copernicus Department. The Reanalysis Team uses global forecast models, climate observations and data assimilation systems to produce datasets that describe the recent evolution of the Earth’s climate system. ECMWF reanalysis data provide an essential contribution to the catalogue of the Climate Data Store as part of the C3S infrastructure.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of scientists whose objective is to develop and maintain state-of-the-art global reanalysis suitable for climate monitoring, research and services. The position is to strengthen the team’s expertise in the validation and diagnostics of climate reanalysis products and in the selection, implementation and validation of input data sets to future reanalysis activities. The Reanalysis Team works with other groups at ECMWF to ensure that reanalysis products meet all C3S user requirements in terms of scientific and technical quality, timeliness, documentation and user support.

4. Main duties and key responsibilities

  • Carrying out validation and diagnostics for the C3S reanalysis products and safe guarding of their quality during production
  • Assisting with the selection, implementation and validation of input data sets to future C3S reanalysis activities
  • Contributing to the operational delivery of the C3S reanalysis products and the achievement of C3S user satisfaction
  • Engaging and collaborating with scientists, analysts and users as needed to maintain the highest standards for the C3S reanalysis effort
  • Providing technical support to tendered activities in C3S
  • Carrying out other activities as required within the Copernicus climate change domain, in support of the C3S operational service delivery

6. Qualifications and experience required

Education

  • A university degree in Meteorology, Physics, Mathematics or a related subject.
  • A PhD is desirable but not essential.

Experience

  • Good demonstrated experience of model diagnostics, and reanalysis intercomparison.
  • Good demonstrated experience working with observations and/or gridded input datasets relevant for climate.
  • Good demonstrated experience working with model-based data assimilation systems in a related field.

Knowledge and skills (including language)

  • Very good analytical skills and relevant knowledge in meteorology and or oceanography as required for the interpretation and validation of reanalysis products and quality assurance before, during and after production.
  • Very good technical skills as required for the development of effective diagnostics for reanalysis products and for the implementation of data sets in future reanalysis activities.
  • Good knowledge of Fortran and Python programming languages.
  • A high level of competence in a linux environment.
  • Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and interviews will be conducted in English.
  • A good knowledge of one of the Centre’s other working languages (French or German) would be an advantage.

7. Other information

Grade remuneration

The successful candidate will be recruited at the A2 grade, according to the scales of the Co-ordinated Organisations and the annual salary will be £58,238.40 net of tax.

This position is assigned to the employment category STF-PS as defined in the Staff Regulations.
