Finnish Meteorological Institute

Post doctoral position in global modelling of marine aerosol

Job description

Finnish Meteorological Institute's (FMI) Kuopio Unit is a research and weather service unit located at the campus of the University of Eastern Finland. Our main research focus is atmospheric aerosol particles and their climate and health effects.

Currently we invite applications for a post doctoral position in the project "Current and future sources of cloud condensation nuclei in the marine atmosphere" funded by the Academy of Finland. The position is for 2.5 years (with a possible extension of 1.5 years) starting from 1st January 2012.

The overall aim of the project is to quantify how microphysical, chemical and meteorological processes control aerosol properties and their variability in the marine boundary layer. This will be done by analysing a broad set of field measurements in terms of transport, transformation and aging with a state-of-the- science global aerosol model GLOMAP. The project will result in an identification of processes with largest uncertainties in order to guide future process studies and field measurements as well as in an improved aerosol scheme in climate model ECHAM.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD in natural or computational sciences, ideally in the area of atmospheric, ocean or climate sciences, physics, chemistry or engineering. In addition, strong numerical modelling skills and fluency in English are essential for this project, and experience with large scale atmospheric models, data analysis and meteorology is highly desirable. We are looking to recruit a highly motivated scientist with good communication and organizational skills who is able to carry out independent research as well as work as a part of a team.

To apply

To apply, please send your CV completed with a list of publications, two letters of reference and a brief statement of research interests to kirjaamo@fmi.fi (and cc'd to hannele.korhonen@fmi.fi) by 30th September 2011.

For more details, please contact Senior Research Scientist Hannele Korhonen (hannele.korhonen@fmi.fi, +358-50-344 7116).
