Postdoctoral Scientist - Downscaling for Climate Services

The Centre for International Development and Environmental Research (ZEU) at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (JLU), Germany, invites applications for a part-time position to the extent of 80 % full-time equivalent for a Postdoctoral Scientist/Research Scientist

The position is funded through the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) project /Useful local climate information for Germany (NUKLEUS) - Hybrid deterministic-stochastic methods and Downscaling for Climate Services/ ( and//is available from the earliest date until March 31st , 2023. The salary of the position is determined by payment group E 13 according to the collective labor agreement of the State of Hesse (TV-H).


In collaboration with the main climate modelling and model development and climate services universities and research institutes in Germany, the successful candidate will work on deterministic bias correction of climate variables, their stochastic downscaling with the Rglimclim weather generator to 1 km resolution, will contribute evaluation tools and interfaces and will provide and integrate bias-corrected climate data in Freva (Freie Universität Berlin Evaluation System) and provide information on climate services for different sectors in Germany. Presentation of the results in conferences and peer-reviewed publications together with participation in the project management, and coordination with the NUKLEUS partners and project reporting belong to the work tasks.

The successful candidate will join a small international and interdisciplinary team working on various aspects of past, present and future climate change and impacts across the Europe and the Mediterranean. Requirement profile:

  • The applicant must hold a Master's or an equivalent degree and a doctorate in mathematics, statistics, physics, Earth or agricultural sciences with interest in climate science and statistical applications
  • In-depth experience handling large data sets (observation data as well as climate model data), statistical modelling, experience working on extremes, evaluation and interpretation of climate model output and statistical analyses, also non-linear procedures
  • Proof of very good programming skills and publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Fluent spoken and written English
  • Experience in interdisciplinary work is an advantage
  • Desirable is a communicative, creative and reliable person, able to work in a team as well as independent
  • Willingness to take responsibility and make a significant contribution to a joint project together with analytical thinking and organizational skills are required
