The successful candidate will join the “Environmental Research and Innovation” (ERIN) department, and in particular its Environmental Research and Technology Platform. With a team of more than 170 scientists and engineers from life science, environmental science, and IT science, the ERIN department is tackling major environmental challenges our society is facing today: climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, environmental pollution prevention and control.
A strategic asset in this respect is the ‘Observatory for Climate and Environment’ (OCE), embedded in the department’s ‘Environmental Research and Technology Platform’ (ERTP). The OCE operates a unique hydro-climatological and biodiversity monitoring network in Luxembourg – organised in 30 nested experimental catchments, spanning a wide range of spatial scales, topographic settings, bedrock geologies and land use types. Environmental data generated within this monitoring network feeds into both fundamental research projects on hydro-ecosystem responses to global change, as well as into applied projects related to environmental management, in particular quantitative and qualitative water resources management and biodiversity monitoring. The OCE’s infrastructures are regularly attracting international collaborations in water resources and biodiversity research, as well as they serve as a testbed for the development of innovative environmental monitoring systems and protocols.
The successful candidate will be hired as a lead engineer and she/he will coordinate a team of highly talented and motivated collaborators. This will include the responsibility of coordinating their interventions and organising their time allocations versus their available working time.
She/he will carry out the design and implementation of a complex sequence of work steps and processes geared towards delivering state-of-the-art infrastructures and data in environmental monitoring, with a special focus on:
- [automated] remote data retrieval systems
- data quality control and validation protocols
- environmental data base management
The selected candidate will collaborate directly with the ERTP Leader and will work under her supervision. Moreover, she/he will closely interact with the research groups of the ERIN department.
She/he will also be involved in the design of new interdisciplinary projects - since their early definition - in order to properly assess and align requests and needs (as expressed by the Principal Investigators) with human resources and infrastructures available at the OCE.
She/he will be possibly asked to:
- manage a project portfolio, building the bridges between a set of projects
- identify the viability of projects and define priorities amongst them
- manage budget of project portfolio
- ensure project follow-up, outcomes, documentation and reporting
Moreover, she/he will contribute to the development of products that will be of direct interest/relevance for the department’s research groups, as well as for public and/or private stakeholders, such as:
- technical guidelines on environmental monitoring infrastructures
- probabilistic treatment of environmental data
- environmental impact assessments
- reports on [extreme] hydro-meteorological events
Besides maintaining an active technology watch, the lead engineer will engage in international networks of environmental observatories, with a view to increase the visibility of ERIN’s Observatory for Climate and Environment and ultimately attract new potential collaborations from the public and private sectors, as well as from academia.
Together with his fellow researchers within the research groups and units of the ERIN department, the successful candidate will contribute to knowledge transfer activities:
- licensing and/or patenting of new products (e.g. sensors, environmental data processing tools)
- publication of peer-reviewed articles in scientific and/or technology journals
- active participation in international conferences and workshops
- citizen science and outreach activities
- M.Sc. in hydrology, meteorology, environmental sciences or in a related field.
- A Ph.D. degree is considered as an asset
- The position requires interdisciplinary thinking, well-developed oral and written communication skills and team spirit to successfully integrate into the multicultural, multilingual and interdisciplinary work environment at LIST
- The candidate should be highly motivated to work on data management, pro-active and open for new challenges
- Strong background in hydrological and meteorological measurement techniques and quality control procedures (e.g. WMO guidelines)
- Experience in the setup and maintenance of measurement networks
- Knowledge on biodiversity monitoring protocols
- Experience of at least three years in the coordination/guidance of a small group of collaborators or students
- Proven programming skills in Matlab, R or Python
- Detailed knowledge and experience in data handling and processing, database development and administration as well as application of statistical methods (e.g. hydrological/meteorological statistics and probability)
- Knowledge in GIS and/or WISKI software would be considered as an asset
- English and either French or German are mandatory
- Luxembourgish is considered as an asset
