Water & Environmental Engineering Program (WEE)
Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, Abu Dhabi
Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Position:
The Water & Environmental Engineering Program (WEE) at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology invites applications for a Post-doctoral Research Fellow in the field of Hydro-climatology. The successful applicant will conduct research as part of a joint research project between Masdar Institute of Science & Technology (MIST) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Hydro-Climatology of Arid Regions
The project aims to improve the accuracy of future water availability scenarios over arid areas, by progressing in the understanding of (a) existing connections between large-scale complex atmospheric processes and the distribution of precipitation at regional and fine scales, (b) the multi-scale dynamics of precipitation, and (c) the presently largely unexplored land surface processes (i.e. fluxes of energy and water) over arid areas.
About Masdar: Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, located in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, is a private, non-for-profit, independent, graduate-level, research-driven institute developed with the support and cooperation of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The goal of the Institute is to develop indigenous R&D capacity in Abu Dhabi, addressing issues of importance to the region in critical research areas such as: renewable energy, sustainability, environment, water resources and microelectronics. Starting Fall 2009, the Institute has begun offering graduate degree programs in science and engineering disciplines with a focus on advanced energy and sustainable technologies. Masdar Institute is located within Masdar City, the world’s first carbon-neutral city (http://www.masdar.ac.ae, http://www.masdarcity.ae, http://web.mit.edu/mit-tdp/projects/abu-dhabi.html).
Requirements: Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (Hydrology, Climate Sciences, Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics), and possess a strong background in one or more of thee following fields: (a) dynamic climatology and atmospheric sciences, (b) physical hydrology and hydro-climatology, and (c) stochastic modeling of hydro-meteorological processes. The successful candidate is expected to have demonstrated excellence in research and scholarship as reflected in peer-reviewed publications.
Package: The position will offer a very competitive salary package (note that the UAE currently offers a tax-free environment). The appointment is for one year, and may be renewed (up to 2 or 3 years) pending satisfactory performance and sufficient funding. The position is expected to commence in October 2012.
