![]() Post-Processing Scientists£21,250-£29,100 per annum (depending on experience and qualifications) Your role A world-leading authority in weather and climate services, the Met Office produces and delivers weather forecasts from a range of deterministic and ensemble numerical weather prediction models. We use the post-processing of raw model data to further improve the quality of data and derive additional forecasts, such as nowcasts. Our Gridded and Site-Specific Post-Processing teams work to improve the science, and support and develop existing systems on a localised and national level. Beyond this, the teams drive forward strategic initiatives, working closely with the Technology & Information Services (TIS) team to take data from various sources to provide a single 'best' forecast. Right now, we have two roles available within the team: one, focusing on site-specific products - data for localised forecasts; and the other on gridded products - data for national forecasts. We'll look to you to develop and implement new and improved post-processing techniques to enhance the quality and usefulness of our products. As well as actively contributing to the development and implementation of our operational post-processing system, you'll pull-through numerical weather prediction model improvements into our weather forecast products. You'll work closely with customers too, internally and externally, to understand their requirements and define and deliver weather forecast information which best meets their needs. About you Whichever stage you're at in your science career, whether you've recently graduated or you've practical experience behind you, you should have a minimum of a 2.1 degree (or equivalent qualification) in a physical/mathematical-based science. A PhD or equivalent research experience (ideally within Meteorology/Astrophysics/Physics) is preferred for the Scientist role. You'll be quick to learn new techniques, software tools and programming languages. But as well as being technically strong, you'll need to be commercially aware. It's also vital that you're confident working collaboratively with colleagues at all levels and comfortable explaining raw data to non-specialists. About the Met Office Beyond weather.
