With a mission to make our forecasts essential to everyone, everyday, the Met Office provides weather services to a wide variety of customers spanning many disciplines. The cloud physics group in Observation Based Research (OBR) undertakes observational research to improve our understanding of cloud processes in the atmosphere. The main resource for this work is the BAe 146 Atmospheric Research Aircraft operated by the Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurement, a joint venture between the Met Office and the Natural Environment Research Council. You will conduct research into cloud physics to improve our understanding of cloud processes and the representation of clouds and precipitation in weather forecasting and climate models. You will need a degree in maths, physics or environmental science, plus an in-depth understanding of cloud physics, its measurement and its parametrization. You will also have a strong research track record in cloud physics demonstrated by relevant scientific publications in the peer-reviewed literature.
