Senior Data Scientist / Senior Machine Learning Engineer

Are you fascinated about the weather? Would you enjoy immersing yourself in challenging scientific and mathematical computing problems to predict the future?

New Zealandís National Meteorological Service, MetService, is a successful global weather company. Heavily technology-based, MetService employs about 300 staff and is headquartered in New Zealandís capital, Wellington.

New Zealand's meteorological challenges are unique. Our island nation is narrow and mountainous, placed half-way between the Equator and the South Pole causing frequent passages of vigorous mid-latitude weather systems. Our rugged terrain exhibits large west-east differences in rainfall and temperature over short distances, whereas the hills hugely influence wind variations. In the summer months, we may see the tails of cyclones from the South Pacific tropics, while in winter, we can experience polar outbreaks. As far as the weather is concerned, there is never a dull moment.

We have a significant career opportunity in our Forecasting Research and Development (FR&D) team for someone experienced in machine learning / deep learning and statistical analysis to lead our programme of work in AI and statistical post processing.

If you are interested in the meteorological application of statistical and machine/deep learning methods, the development of operational systems, and influencing capability growth in the team through your leadership; then we encourage you to apply.

We are seeking a Senior Data Scientist having:

  • Postgraduate degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, mathematics, or related fields
  • Eight or more yearsí experience in machine learning / deep learning and / or statistical techniques
  • Experience with big data, especially in Earth sciences context
  • Familiarity with Linux, Amazon Web Services, high-performance computing; or similar experience in running operational systems
  • Strong computer science fundamentals including knowledge of data structure and algorithms
  • Solid software development skills (e.g. in Python, Julia) and experience in ML/DL libraries (e.g., Scikit-Learn, Flux.jl, TensorFlow)
  • Desire to lead other research scientists
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas to non-scientific audiences
  • Ability to plan, organise, prioritise, manage, and track numerous concurrent activities to successful outcomes

Why join us? This is a time marked by rapid change in how the world around us affects the weather and weather forecasting. Our new Wellington office underpins creative collaboration, which is complemented by remote and flexible working. The Forecast Research and Development team is an energetic and diverse group of scientists and engineers. We multi-task across a range of activities from investigating an idea in prototypes, to high-quality software development for operational applications, to agile support of customer requests and operations.
