Research Scientist - Atmospheric Modeler
New Zealand's National Meteorological Service, MetService, is a successful global weather company. Heavily technology based, MetService employs about 300 staff and is headquartered in New Zealand's capital, Wellington.
New Zealand's meteorological challenges are unique. Our island country is narrow and mountainous, placed half-way between the Equator and the South Pole causing frequent passages of vigorous mid-latitude weather systems. During summer, we may see the tails of cyclones from the South Pacific tropics, while in winter, we can experience polar outbreaks. Our rugged terrain drives extreme variations in rainfall and temperature over short distances; thus, we require high-resolution weather models responsive to significant temporal and spatial change. As far as the weather is concerned, there is never a dull moment.
We have a great opportunity in our Forecast Research and Development team for someone enthusiastic about numerical prediction and weather forecasting. If you are excited about being involved in prototyping and testing state-of-the-art numerical weather prediction systems, and the development of operational systems, then this might be you.
As a successful applicant, you will bring:
Depending on your experience, the offered role will be Junior, Research, or Senior Scientist. The Forecast Research and Development team is an international group of scientists. Our multi-disciplinary expertise enables us to support a range of activities from implementation of an idea in prototypes, to high-quality software development of operational applications, to agile support of customer requests and support of operations. We look forward to hearing from you.
