The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), a multidisciplinary center for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for

4 Scientific Programmers (m/f)

to aid in the development, support, and optimization of its Earth system model.

The applicants are expected to have a masters degree (or equivalent) in the physical sciences (including chemistry, engineering and mathematics), a thorough knowledge of FORTRAN90, UNIX, at least one high-level scripting language, and experience working with high-performance computing (HPC) systems. Advanced workflow concepts, particularly in data rich environments, are especially desired. We are particularly interested in the following areas of expertise, matching the following short to medium-term tasks:

  • Optimization of codes for massively parallel computers, with emphasis on the thread level with respect to multicore CPU architecture, to prepare our models for the new generation of HPC systems.
  • Advanced techniques for coupling component models of the Earth system, including the optimization of coupled models.
  • Modelling the interactions between the land surface and the atmosphere, to prepare our land biosphere model JSBACH for our new modelling framework ICON.
  • Ocean modelling, to support our development of the ICON ocean component.

An applicant's ability to make effective contributions in some subset of these areas must be demonstrated by an appropriate track record.

The position is initially offered for two years, with the possibility of becoming permanent thereafter. Exceptionally qualified candidates may be offered permanent employment at the outset. The payment depends on qualification and experience according to a civil service position (TVoeD E13). The position includes extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.

For further information, please contact the managing director of MPI-M, Professor Jochem Marotzke, via E-mail (jochem.marotzke@zmaw.de); applications should be directed to the address listed below.

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientists and scientific support staff and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status. All applications (including a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, copies of scientific degrees, and the names and contact information of two references), received before 1st of June 2009 will receive full consideration. The positions will remain open until filled.

Applications should be sent via E-Mail to application-mpim@zmaw.de or by post to: Max Planck Institute for Meteorology Administration (SAS2009-06/1-4) Bundesstrasse 53 D-20146 Hamburg, Germany
