The Centre for Climate Research Singapore (CCRS) was formally launched in March 2013. The centre will focus on a number of weather and climate research areas which are of importance to Singapore and the wider South East Asian region.

Flooding resulting from severe, convective rainfall events is a primary meteorological hazard for Singapore. Significant progress has been made in recent years to apply high-resolution Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) systems to provide advance warning of these events (as well as other local extreme weather phenomena, e.g. wind gusts). Society has benefitted from this work through more timely, accurate, and detailed forecasts for use by impact assessors, emergency services, and policy makers. CCRS is expanding its efforts to develop state-of-the-art NWP capabilities for operational prediction, as well as to become a regional centre of expertise in high-resolution NWP research and development. Towards this end, CCRS has a formal collaboration with the UK Met Office Science Programme, including an exciting new collaboration project to develop enhanced high-resolution NWP capabilities for Singapore. Exchanges of scientists between these two organisations are already taking place.

We are seeking scientists with a strong background in meteorology or a related discipline to join the high-resolution NWP team. The specific job responsibilities will include:

• Carrying out research to improve the quality of forecasts produced by the high-resolution ‘SINGV’ NWP model, for the benefit of Singaporean stakeholders.
• Diagnosis of SINGV performance and its data assimilation system, in terms of relevant high-impact weather parameters, e.g. heavy rainfall, wind gusts, etc.
• To provide scientific/technical advice to other team members on some work aspects to improve the effectiveness of the team.
• To contribute significantly to the presentation, publication and documentation of work internally and externally in order to maintain our scientific capability and integrity in high-resolution NWP/data-assimilation and thereby promoting our reputation.

Candidate Requirements

Essential

• A PhD (or equivalent research experience) in a relevant physical science such as meteorology, oceanography, mathematics or physics.
• Demonstrated ability to undertake research work both individually and as part of a team.
• Experience in development/testing of NWP models and/or their data assimilation algorithms.
• High level of proficiency in scientific computing.
• Proven record of success as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
• Ability to supervise and coach less experienced team members in conducting research projects (for Senior Research Scientists).
• Good written and verbal presentation skills.
