![]() National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA)Atmospheric Scientist - New Zealand
NIWA is a dynamic research organisation whose purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders. NIWA's Lauder atmospheric research site is a world-leading observatory with a long record of observations taken in a data-sparse area. The data are used for satellite and model validation and to monitor baseline change in the atmosphere. Chemistry-climate modelling is also conducted at Lauder. We host a comprehensive suite of remote-sensing and in-situ instruments both at Lauder and in Antarctica. We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Scientist to contribute to research on atmospheric greenhouse and other trace gases. A major component of the work will be to oversee NIWA's contribution to the Total Column Carbon Observing Network (TCCON). This includes the ground-based infrared FTS measurement programme and advanced analysis and interpretation of the resultant data sets. You will be conducting systematic atmospheric composition and radiation measurements under international protocols, obtaining high quality internationally recognised data sets. You will perform data analysis and interpretation and publish the results of your research. With a recognised PhD in atmospheric science or equivalent experience and strengths in instrumentation and/or engineering design or related fields, you will have:
As an engaged team player, you will enjoy working with the Lauder group and with teams across NIWA's other sites, communicating positively and productively with a wide range of staff. You will be self-motivated and results-orientated, conscientious and well organised with a keen eye for detail. You will also have good interpersonal skills, adaptable and committed to on-going professional development. NIWA offers competitive remuneration and benefits and an attractive location. Lauder is located in a rural part of the South Island of New Zealand. Its surroundings offer great recreational potential, including major lakes and the skiing hub Queenstown.
