PhD position "Understanding the biogeochemistry of enhanced weathering for CO2 removal in the sub-tropics"

Position: Southern Cross University is currently recruiting a PhD candidate to undertake industry funded research into the biogeochemical cycling associated with enhanced weathering in subtropical soils.

Background: There is a growing recognition that reducing the impacts of climate change will require active removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. Enhanced weathering is one such CO2 removal strategy and involves the addition of silicate minerals to promote carbon storage in humid soils. However the impact of silicate weathering on soil biogeochemistry, including nutrient cycling, microbial dynamics, and greenhouse gas production, remains poorly understood, particularly in the sub-tropics. We are seeking a PhD candidate to help redress this knowledge gap. This work will involve both lab and field studies and will rely heavily on stable isotope techniques.

The candidate will be based at Southern Cross University (Lismore, Australia). Southern Cross University received the highest rank of 5.0 in the most recent national research excellence assessment and is well recognised nationally and internationally for its biogeochemical expertise and infrastructure (https://www.scu.edu.au/centre-for-coastal-biogeochemistry/). Applicants must have an Honours or Master degree, undertaken in English, in a related field such as biogeochemistry, environmental chemistry, and/or geology. The project will involve periods of intensive field measurements, laboratory work, and data processing. Experience with either large data sets, analytical instrumentation, and/or stable isotopes is preferred but not essential as training and support will be provided for all aspects of the project.

Scholarships provide a tax-free annual stipend of $28,895 AUD for 3.3 years, and a tuition fee waiver for international students. Interested applicants should send a CV and short (< 1 page) statement highlighting their research background and interests, with respect to the criteria above, to Prof. Dirk Erler (dirk.erler@scu.edu.au). Only short-listed applicants will be notified. Closing date for applications is the 4th March 2022.

Southern Cross University is based in Lismore, northern NSW, Australia. The region is a great place to live with a sub-tropical climate, some of the best beaches and surfing in the world, plus great fishing, scuba diving and wilderness areas. The quality of life is high and the cost of living relatively low.
