Computer Scientist – to develop climate model analysis toolsTo work on the development of methods and tools for analysis of climate model output. The work will focus on developing software systems and operational tools for diagnosing and quality control of both regional and global climate models. This includes the full range of activities from researching methods, developing and coding the software to introducing the tools into operational use. The methods will be developed in close collaboration with climate modelling and analysis scientists, as well as system specialists. The work requires a readiness to engage in the range of activities involved in setting up, running and archiving results from global and regional climate models. We seek a person with at least a Masters qualification in computer sciences, numerical analysis, mathematical statistics or a similar discipline focussing on software development, preferably combined with meteorology/oceanography/physics or a similar discipline. One or more years of work experience would be considered beneficial. Very good knowledge of software development in a Linux/Unix environment is required, such as shell scripting, C/C++, Matlab, R, Python, Fortran, web- and gui-programming.
We seek a person who can work independently on software development tasks but is also comfortable to interact within a group atmosphere in this process. Good knowledge of spoken and written English is required, along with a willingness to learn Swedish.
The work will take place within the Rossby Centre at the Research Department of SMHI. The Rossby Centre has access to a number of dedicated linux compute clusters and high-end analysis servers.
