Job opportunity
at SMHI

Would you like to be part of a team developing new approaches to climate modelling and delivering qualified climate change information to society and a range of researchers and stakeholders?
We seek a:

Research Scientist

To work on the development and application of a new high-resolution, Regional Climate Model. Over the past 5 years SMHI along with other meteorological agencies in Europe have collaborated on the development of a new, non-hydrostatic limited-area weather forecast model, applicable to resolutions between ~1-15km. The Rossby Centre, along with a number of other climate modelling groups in Europe, plan to further develop this model into a next-generation Regional Climate Model. The work will entail both scientific and technical development of the model system, for application to long climate simulations and assumes a readiness to engage in the full range of activities pertinent to the development, application and subsequent analysis of such a complex model system.

The work will take place within the Rossby Centre at the Research Department of SMHI and will involve close collaboration with other model development scientists in the Rossby Centre and in the Numerical Weather Prediction section of SMHI. The work will also be performed in collaboration with a number of other climate groups in Europe working on the same model system.

We seek a person with at least a masters degree in meteorology/physics/mathematics or a similar discipline. Prior experience in numerical modelling of the atmosphere is a requirement as is a good knowledge of the programming languages Fortran and Unix/Linux, while knowledge of parallel coding, such as MPI and OpenMP are seen as beneficial. A PhD qualification would be beneficial. We seek a person who can work independently on complex problems but is also comfortable sharing larger tasks within a group. Good knowledge of spoken and written English is required, along with a clear willingness to learn Swedish.

The position is permanent and will be located at SMHI in Norrköping, Sweden

More information is available from Colin Jones, Head of the Rossby Centre and Andréa Björk, Human Resources. Union representatives are Barry Broman ST and Lennart Robertson SACO. Each person can be contacted by phone on +4611 4958000 or by email at: Forename.Surname@smhi.se.

Applications marked with Reference Number 147 should reach SMHI no later than March 5th 2010 and should be sent to:
