At the Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University (MISU) (www.misu.su.se) we conduct research and education in an international environment within four main areas: Atmospheric physics, Dynamic meteorology, Physical oceanography and Chemical meteorology. In all these areas there is a strong focus on the climate and on processes important for the climate and its development. The department employs some 65 individuals, of which about 30 are scientists, 20 PhD students and 15 in the administration and the technical support. The department is part of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research (www.bolin.su.se) and together with three other departments at the university covers research of most of the important aspects of the climate system.

The global response to changing CO2 is determined by a series of feedback mechanisms, and it is thought that the dominant positive feedbacks arise from changes The main focus of this PhD project is to investigate how absorbing aerosol particles in the atmosphere impact the formation and properties of warm (i.e. liquid) tropical clouds. Large amounts of absorbing aerosol particles, including black carbon originating from biomass burning and soil dust from deserts, are during parts of the year transported above the stratocumulus and shallow cumulus clouds that dominate the skies in many tropical ocean regions. These low-level clouds are extremely important for the global energy budget and thereby Earth's climate, but based on current knowledge it is not even certain whether the overall cloud reflectivity increases or decreases due to the influence of absorbing aerosols. The successful candidate will in this project use a multi-method approach - data from several state-of-the-art satellite instruments will be complemented with large-eddy simulation and available in-situ observations - to formulate and test a hypothesis on how absorbing aerosols affect the underlying cloud properties.
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of meteorology stipulates that at least 90 points must be in one of the subjects meteorology, oceanography, physics or chemistry, at least 15 credits must be in mathematics, and an independent project work corresponding to at least 15 credits must have been completed. The requirements can also be met by acquiring the corresponding knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.
Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle program may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. The primary assessment criteria in appointing a doctoral student should be the capacity to benefit from the training.
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity: the candidates' documented knowledge in a relevant field of research, written and oral proficiency in both Swedish and English, the capacity for analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence. The assessment will be based on previous experience and grades, the quality of the degree project, references, relevant experience, interviews, and the candidate's written motivation for seeking the position.

Terms of employment
The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. The total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.
Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may also engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
