Description:

It is widely recognized that climate change can affect the chemical composition of the atmosphere, particularly in large urban centres, with negative consequences for human health and ecosystems. Therefore, it is necessary to study simultaneously air pollution and climate change in urban environments. The Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (MABA) is among the twelve largest megacities in the world. Given the large number of emission sources that currently exists in the urban area, it is necessary to assess not only the current state of air pollution, but also its possible evolution within the context of climate change.

We are looking for potential candidates to apply for the 5-year Doctoral Fellowship Program from the National Scientific and Technological Research Council of Argentina (CONICET) (http://www.conicet.gov.ar/becario/), in the framework of the PICT-2015-1676 project: Modelling pollutant concentrations in the atmosphere of the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires.

The successful candidate will:

  1. Implement a last-generation, comprehensive Eulerian air quality model (e.g., CMAQ, WRF-Chem) to estimate the concentrations of air pollutants (NO2, O3, PM, etc.) in the MABA with high spatial and temporal resolution
  2. Evaluate and study the spatiotemporal patterns of major air pollutants under current and future conditions
  3. Assess the potential impacts of projected climate change scenarios on air quality of the MABA region

Requirements:

  • Master degree or equivalent (before 1st April 2018) in Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering or related disciplines
  • Average grades greater than 7 (out of 10)
  • Good programming skills (Shell scripting, FORTRAN, C or similar)
  • Experience with Linux and atmospheric simulation models is highly desirable
  • Good knowledge of Spanish and English
  • Under 30 years old
