Associate Scientist II

National Operational Hydrologic
Remote Sensing Center

The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research Visiting Scientist Programs office is recruiting an Associate Scientist to work at the National Weather Service National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center (NOHRSC), located in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

The selected applicant will provide hydrologic research, development and operational support, hydrologic model data interpretation and analysis. This will include operational interpretation and analysis of snow conditions and model representations, data assimilation, customer service and outreach to a wide variety of government and private sector entities in water resource management, disaster emergency preparedness, weather and flood forecasting, agriculture, transportation and commerce.

The successful candidate will provide operational support for the NOHRSC's products and services, software development in GIS and other applications, prepare technical reports and scientific publications and present papers at seminars and scientific meetings.


Required knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with an ability to communicate effectively with external customers, partners, vendors, etc.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS, including Spatial Analyst, or extensive experience in comparable geographic information system.
  • Developed knowledge of hydrometeorological observing networks and station metadata. Strong understanding of the uncertainties associated with observational data.
  • Knowledge of numerical land-surface modeling and associated datasets.
  • Knowledge and experience with snowpack physical characteristics, snow data collection and snow modeling in a variety of environments.

DESIRED (but not required):

  • Master's degree.
  • Demonstrated abilities in web-orientated languages such as Java, Perl, and Python and Linux operating systems.

This is a full-time replacement one-year term position with possibility of extension. Qualified applicants should have a Bachelor's degree in physical sciences, hydrology or a closely related discipline (Master's degree preferred), and three years experience in a related field.

Initial consideration will be given to applications received by close of business on Monday, January 9, 2012. Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.
