Meteorological Editor of Sailing Directions
Starting salary £28,210 + pension benefits
Based in Taunton, Somerset
Admiralty brand, providing award-winning world coverage for navigational charts, products and services. Already the market leader in the provision of information to international merchant shipping, we are now forging a strong presence in other market sectors as well as advancing the development of digital products.
Sailing Directions provides essential information on all aspects of navigation for merchant shipping worldwide. Meteorological data is one of the publication's most critical elements, and as Met Editor you'll have sole responsibility for all information concerning weather, currents and ice within Sailing Directions.
This key role will position you as the UKHO's in-house meteorological expert and our main link with the Met Office. In producing concise, clear and comprehensive information for mariner customers, you will determine whether data is valid or irrelevant, accurate or fallible, worthy of inclusion or potentially damaging. This editorial control will extend to visual and graphic presentation, where you'll work closely with the Digital Imaging team to ensure a sensible balance between clarity and modernity. Probably holding a degree in meteorology, it is a given that you will have expert meteorological and global climate knowledge, plus proven expertise in oceanography, ocean currents and sea ice. The role will also require fine judgement, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to transform complex information into comprehensible format. This is a Ministry of Defence non-reserved post and is therefore open to UK, British Commonwealth and European Economic Area nationals. Candidates should normally have been resident in the UK for at least the last five years.
