Utah State University

Department of Watershed Sciences

Postdoctoral Position and Graduate Research Assistantship
in Regional Climate Modeling

1) The Department of Watershed Sciences at Utah State University requests applications for a postdoctoral research position. Research will focus on lake-atmosphere interactions at a regional scale. Successful candidate will head a project to couple a lake scheme into the Noah land surface model in the Weather & Research Forecasting (WRF) Model. He or she will then use the coupled model to perform high-resolution simulations over the United States in order to explore the role of lakes in the regional climate system.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in atmospheric science, hydrology, or a related science discipline. The candidate should have experience in running WRF or other related meso-scale models (e.g. MM5, RSM, RegCM3) and analyzing results, and a record of publishing in scientific journals, presenting at national conferences, and using both Fortran 90 and data analysis/visualization software (e.g. NCL, Matlab, GrADS).

The position will be funded under the newly awarded NOAA grant, and is available for one to three years, depending on funding and successful progress by candidate. The position provides various health and other insurance benefits.

Apply with curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests, and up to three professional references. Contact Dr. Jiming Jin for more information, or send application by mail or email:

2) Graduate research assistant needed for support of M.S. or Ph.D. research in regional climate modeling. Research begins fall of 2009, but assistantship is available immediately.

Assistant should have experience in running the Weather Research & Forecasting Model or other regional weather and climate models (e.g. MM5, RSM, or RegCM3), with a focus on land-atmosphere interactions. Assistant should have a background in atmospheric sciences or hydrology, and skills in quantitative modeling and computer programming (Fortran 77, Fortran 90, and the Unix shell).

Assistant will enroll in the Utah State University (USU) Department of Watershed Sciences (http://www.cnr.usu.edu/wats/), or the USU Department of Plants, Soils, and Climate (http://psc.usu.edu/). Successful candidate will receive full-year stipend and tuition waiver for up to three years.

Utah State University is located in northern Utahıs Cache Valley, 80 miles north of Salt Lake City, and is surrounded by scenic mountains, lakes, rivers and ski resorts. Please contact Dr. Jiming Jin (Jiming.Jin@usu.edu) for further information
