Sustainable Fisheries in Welsh Waters

Fisheries Scientists (2 Posts)
Starting Salary: £30,122 (on Grade 7) p.a.

Postgraduate Fisheries Scientists (2 posts)
Starting Salary: £23,811 (on Grade 6) p.a.

The School of Ocean Sciences is leading a sustainable fisheries science programme in close collaboration with the Welsh fishing industry, Government and the Countryside Council for Wales. The project is designed to develop the science and monitoring necessary to underpin sustainable fisheries in Wales and to provide the fishing industry and Government with advice to inform management and conservation of marine resources.

We are now seeking to appoint two Postdoctoral Fisheries Scientists with interests in 1) finfish fisheries and 2) crustacean and whelk fisheries. Suitable candidates will have a background in population ecology, experience of working in the field both independently and in teams, a good track record of publications and the ability to work to deadlines.

In addition we seek to appoint two Postgraduate Scientists who will provide the logistical, laboratory and general field support to the postdoctoral team. Suitable candidates will have a background in marine science or ecology and will be able to demonstrate evidence of having worked in the field ideally at sea and with fishermen. Exceptional candidates may be able to register for a higher degree.

Due to the nature of the work, all positions require the post holders to be able to pass an ENG1 seagoing medical examination, to be able to work at sea for extended periods in a variety of sea conditions, and must hold a current valid driving licence.

The positions are available from 01 July, 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter. The duration of the posts lasts for 20 months initially (or a shorter period depending on agreed start date) with the possibility of a 15 month extension thereafter.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Professor Michel Kaiser (michel.kaiser@bangor.ac.uk).

Application forms and further particulars should be obtained by contacting Human Resources, Bangor University; tel: (01248) 382926/388132; e-mail: personnel@bangor.ac.uk; web: www.bangor.ac.uk
