Ecologist / Senior Ecologist

Bath or London
Reference: 3208

We are looking for an Ecologist/Senior Ecologist with consultancy experience to sit within our multi-disciplinary Environment team. This role offers the opportunity to become involved in a wide range of projects, from urban renewal schemes and mixed-use developments across the UK to international regional-scale environmental planning projects.

For UK based projects, you will be responsible for carrying out ecological walkover surveys and advising our clients of constraints and further survey requirements, organising protected species surveys with a range of our trusted sub-consultants, preparing ecology chapters for Environmental Impact Assessments, and working with the wider design team to establish opportunities for ecological enhancements.

Internationally, we cover a lot of work on a city-wide and regional scale, providing strategic advice to clients on minimising impacts (particularly in coastal and marine environments) and working to best international practice standards for environmental sustainability. Although this work is predominantly UK based, there is the opportunity for occasional travel.

We are not looking for someone to spend a lot of time on site carrying out species surveys or supervising works, this is more of a project management and advisory role. We are a small ecology team that sit within a larger team advising on issues such as sustainability, waste management, air quality and climate change resilience, with a view to improving the way that people live and connect with their environments. Thus this role provides an opportunity to think laterally, to gain exposure to a wide variety of interesting projects and to integrate biodiversity and green infrastructure into project planning and design.

Main duties

  • Reviewing technical data and carrying out site walkovers to identify ecological constraints on projects;
  • Advising clients on risks and opportunities;
  • Managing sub-consultants and organising surveys;
  • Preparing high quality reports to CIEEM guidelines;
  • Project and fee management;
  • Conducting ecological walkover/Phase 1 habitat surveys when required;
  • Attending workshops and/or presenting ideas to the client and design teams;
  • Working within the wider team to improve best-practice standards and knowledge across the industry.

This is a senior role reporting to the Associate Ecologist, so whilst collaborative working and discussion is encouraged (and considered vital on more complex projects) you will be responsible for making decisions regarding the day-today running of the projects that you manage.

The role can be London or Bath based, with occasional travel in the UK and potentially overseas. You will not be expected to undertake surveys outside of normal office hours.

Person specification

  • Ability to review technical data and provide sound advice to clients on programme/risks;
  • Excellent report writing skills and experience of writing reports to CIEEM guidelines;
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • Good knowledge of protected species issues and wildlife legislation and guidance;
  • Ability to work alone, including making day-to-day decisions, and as part of a team;
  • Able to think laterally and be confident sharing ideas/presenting in front of a wider team;
  • A keen interest in integrating biodiversity into all aspects of design;
  • Possess initiative and a positive attitude;
  • Ability to carry out ecological walkover/ Phase 1 Habitat surveys;
  • GIS experience is desirable but not essential.

Qualifications & Experience:

Demonstrable experience delivering ecological consultancy work, with a relevant degree, and Full membership of CIEEM.
