We are looking for an enthusiastic spatial data scientist to join a team of environmental data experts to help take forward our understanding of the natural environment.

This role is based at our Wallingford site, in a beautiful location by the River Thames, with on-site restaurant, amongst over 200 research, technical and support staff. We offer a public sector pension scheme, 30 days annual leave and 10 days public and privilege holiday per annum.

The role will be within the Water Information Management Group, working with researchers and software developers across the organisation. The focus of the role is on analysing and disseminating our important spatial data holdings.

Your primary role will be to:

  • undertake analyses of large spatio-temporal datasets of the freshwater environment
  • help to deliver data and science outputs through the development of data-rich APIs, working with our software developers to build these into applications
  • take forwards the use of High Performance and Cloud computing for spatial data analysis, e.g. through use of NERC's JASMIN facility.

About you

You will have a good undergraduate degree (2:1) in a numerate subject; preferably a Masters, with significant computing content or equivalent qualification is essential. It is likely that you will have spatial analysis skills using open source (e.g. GRASS, GDAL) and/or proprietary (e.g. ArcGIS) GIS software. You will have experience with Linux systems and HPC or cloud technologies. You must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, communicating with line management when appropriate and you must be able to work effectively as part of a team, taking the lead as and when appropriate. Proven ability to organise own work to meet agreed deadlines is essential.
