- Contract: permanent at 37.5 hours per week.

- Salary: £35,000 to £41,000 per year dependant on experience and publication record.

Who are The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT)
GWCT is a leading UK-based wildlife research charity, headquarters are in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, with a number of strategic satellite research bases in the UK (see www.gwct.org.uk). Our goal is to ensure sustainable land management alongside a countryside rich in wildlife.
GWCT operates a Salmon and Trout Research Centre, at East Stoke near Wareham in Dorset, where a team of fisheries scientists undertake world-class research on ecologically and economically important species - Atlantic salmon, brown trout and their habitats (40 peer review publications in the last five years). The teamwork in close collaboration with the relevant government regulators, international salmonid conservations groups, universities and NGO's both in the UK and abroad.
This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and experienced statistician and data modeller with a track record of publishing data rich work, to join GWCT's fisheries team to use our large datasets (>200k tagged individuals) to further understanding and promote better conservation and management of salmonid stocks in England & Wales and beyond.
- Lead on and collaborate on studies exploring our extensive data sets.
- Provide support on experimental design, statistics and data modelling to the GWCT fisheries team.
- Initiate, plan and lead statistics and/or data science research projects involving novel analytical approaches.
- Contribute to grant applications and develop external collaborations in statistical research.
- Lead and collaborate in the development of data analysis tools and methodologies on defined contracts.
- Produce peer-reviewed research publications and communicate research findings at conferences and symposia.
- Assist with our fisheries fieldwork at key times of year.
- Contribute to the communications of our work to policy makers and key stakeholders.
Selection criteria - Essential
- Qualified to PhD and with post-doctoral experience.
- Excellent knowledge of statistical theory, including an understanding of spatially or temporally correlated data, and good mathematical abilities.
- Experience with Bayesian statistics and/or advanced machine learning methods, particularly using R and Bayesian languages (jags, stan, nimble, etc.).
- Experience in experimental design for ecological research.
- Able to work as part of a team and independently, with the ability to lead development of new research proposals and contribute to winning new funding.
- The ability to mentor and train others in statistics or data science.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, attention to detail and time management with a proven ability to deliver to deadlines.
- Track record of developing and leading publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or detailed project reports.
Selection criteria - Beneficial
- Experience in freshwater fisheries research and fieldwork.
- Experience of handling data on fish.
- Knowledge of salmonids.
- GIS mapping skills.
