Master of Research in Ecology and Environmental Management

Applications for october 2009 open until August

This 51-week course prepares students for careers in ecology and biodiversity research, conservation, and the management of natural resources. It is aimed at students who seek an advanced, research orientated qualification at the interface of the natural and decision making sciences. It provides a thorough grounding in skills, knowledge and research experience, and is taught jointly by the Environment Department and the Department of Biology, two of the UK's leading departments for ecological research and teaching.

Key features of the course include:

  • Three research projects including an internal group project, an internal individual project and a 12 week external summer placement either in a non-university organization within the UK or a university or non-university organization abroad.
  • The opportunity to conduct projects with researchers at the leading edge of their field.
  • Two week field skills course in Majorca
  • Skills modules in ecological statistics, use of R, spatial analysis, molecular techniques.
  • Advanced science modules (some optional) in Biology of Environmental Change;

Conservation Genetics; Environment, Law & Policy; Fisheries Ecology and Management; Tools for Environmental Assessment; Pollution Effects on Soil/plant/water Systems; Protected areas: Design, Implementation and Management; Wildlife Management

  • Transferable skills including grant applications and enterprise.
  • Assessment methods are diverse and research related, with a minimum of closed exams
  • A small class size (20-25), all teaching dedicated at masters level.

Graduates either go onto PhDs (about 40%), or are employed within consultancies, NGOs, research or government institutes and other organizations concerned with conservation or the management of natural resources (about 50%).

The Biology Department at York was ranked second best in the UK to study biosciences by the Guardian, and is equal first in the recent Research Assessment Exercise for top quality research amongst broad-spectrum bioscience departments.
