Are you a self-motivated trail-blazer with experience in minerals or petroleum exploration, extraction
or regulation?
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is the government agency that will soon be responsible
for regulatory functions concerning New Zealand's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the area of
ocean between the 12 and 200 nautical mile limit and the continental shelf of NZ. We are currently
looking for experienced, leading-edge professionals to be part of a new consenting team and to add
to our existing compliance team responsible for this new function. We are recruiting for five positions
in total; one Senior Advisor EEZ Compliance sitting within the Compliance Group and four sitting
within our Applications and Assessment Group; one Principal Advisor (Auckland or Wellington); one
Senior Advisor (Wellington) and two Advisors (Wellington)
Senior Advisor EEZ Compliance - Wellington based position
The EPA is responsible for monitoring, compliance and enforcement of activities in the EEZ.
This position will contribute to the best practice delivery of the monitoring, compliance and
enforcement function for activities covered by the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf
(Environmental Effects) Act 2012. This includes providing quality technical and procedural advice and
support for monitoring and compliance.
We are looking for a self-motivated person who has senior level work experience in a relevant
industry, and/or years of experience working in a regulatory environment. You must have a good
understanding of compliance principles and processes and a working knowledge of environmental
legislation, preferably in the offshore marine environment.
Our ideal candidate:
- Has a tertiary qualification in the physical or environmental sciences and 5+ years of experience in the offshore minerals or petroleum exploration or extraction industry;
- Has a proven ability to identify, analyse and diagnose problems in a logical and rational manner and to find creative solutions
- Has proven negotiation and conflict management skills
- Has good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- The successful candidate must also be able to pass and maintain a current Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) Certificate and a Certificate of Medical Fitness
Principal Advisor, EEZ Applications Team (Consenting) – one Wellington or Auckland based
position
To be a principal advisor, you'll need substantial experience in a senior environmental or other
relevant regulatory position with repute as a regulatory specialist skilled in working with central and
local government, boards, and decision makers. Your experience will be "guru" like and is required to
exceed the requirements of a Senior Advisor in the Applications Team.
Our ideal candidate;
- Has a tertiary qualification in planning, physical sciences, environmental management or a general degree with 10+ years of relevant experience in the oil and gas industry or regulatory setting.
- Can analyse information and provide advice based on findings;
- Has excellent communication skills, including thinking, and writing in plain English;
- Develops and maintains productive relationships with external parties;
- Enjoys new and challenging work; and
- Is proactive and always looking to make improvements.
Senior Advisor, EEZ Applications Team (Consenting) - one Wellington based position
To be a senior advisor, you will have in depth understanding and experience relating to off-shore oil
and gas exploration and extraction in an industry or regulatory setting. We value teamwork and the
ability to manage competing priorities while remaining clam under pressure. You will need to be
exceptionally well organised and have good systems for managing industry relationships, information,
contracts and procurement processes.
- Has 5+ years of experience in off-shore minerals or petroleum exploration, extraction or regulation;
- Can analyse information and provide advice based on findings;
- Has excellent communication skills, including thinking, and writing in plain English;
- Develops and maintains productive relationships with external parties;
- Enjoys new and challenging work; and
- Is proactive and always looking to make improvements.
Advisors, EEZ Applications Team (Consenting) - Two Wellington based positions
To be an advisor, you'll be someone with a positive and solution-focused attitude who enjoys variety.
We value the ability to manage competing priorities while remaining clam under pressure. You will
need to be exceptionally well organised and have good systems for managing information, contracts
and procurement processes.
Our ideal candidate
- Has a tertiary qualification in planning, physical sciences, environmental management or a general degree with 2+ years of relevant experience
- Has 1-3 years' experience in minerals or petroleum exploration, extraction or regulation, preferably in the off-shore environment;
- Can analyse information and provide advice based on findings;
- Can think, write and communicate in plain English;
- Can build relationships with external parties;
- Enjoys new and challenging work; and
- Is proactive and always looking to make improvements.
All EEZ staff must be willing to travel and prepared to be away at Hearings across New Zealand for
extended periods e.g. week nights for several weeks.
