Junior Science Officer
in the
Physical and Engineering Sciences unit
The European Science Foundation (ESF) provides a platform for its Member Organisations to advance European research and explore new directions for research at the European level.
Established in 1974 as an independent non-governmental organisation, the ESF currently serves 79 Member Organisations, including Research Funding Agencies, Research Performing Organisations and Academies, across 30 countries.
Mission of the Position
The principal mission of this position is to assist the unit's science staff in promoting research collaboration in an inter- and multi-disciplinary environment across Europe; to impartially support the ESF peer review processes; to assist in the development of science policy; and, if applicable, to represent the Foundation and improve its visibility to the European research community and to its Member Organisations.
Position Responsibilities
This position will involve:
- Assisting the EUROCORES Science Officer in:
- Supporting the project selection phase in a EUROCORES Programme according to the EUROCORES procedures (Peer Review);
- Supporting the execution of workplans for networking and dissemination activities, including overseeing the organisation and reporting of the activities;
- Supporting the relevant Scientific and Management Committees within the overall ESF Mission and providing, in a timely manner, minutes and reports;
- Supporting the Final and Mid Term evaluation of EUROCORES Programmes;
- Assisting the Head of Unit and the EUROCORES Science Officer in
- communication and information activities by taking responsibility for science communication (material for hard copy publication, including annual activity reports, and the Web)
- the management of budgets of relevant activities in compliance with ESF Financial Rules and Delegated Financial Authority and providing necessary information to the Dept. of Administration and Finance allowing the regular presentation of financial reports;
- Representing ESF, on behalf of the Head of Unit / Science Officers in external meetings, when necessary;
- Maintaining an up-to-date awareness of relevant scientific and research policy developments;
- Undertaking other specific tasks at the request of the Head of Unit.
Profile and Competencies required
The successful jobholder should demonstrate the following competencies:
Specific competencies
- PhD/Master's degree and preferably with a further 1-2 years' research experience in a relevant science area; Materials science and Engineering experience would be an advantage;
- Basic knowledge of European and national research structures and institutions and European and international science policy;
- High standard of spoken and written English, with a working knowledge of another European language an advantage;
- Ability to draft under supervision concise and clear scientific documents;
- Good working knowledge of MS Office systems and of electronic databases and Web sites.
Inter-personal competencies:
- Good organisational skills and capacity to deliver on allocated tasks and respond in a timely manner to deadlines;
- Action-orientated and responsible;
- Creative, willing to take initiative and continuously improvement-minded;

Employment conditions
This full time position is offered for a 6 month contract preferably starting June / July 2010. A part-time position could be considered.
The place of work is Strasbourg, France.
The salary level will be based on experience and qualifications of the successful candidate and will follow ESF terms and conditions.
