Position:
Biotechnology is a strategically important focus for the TOTAL Group. In
that field, TOTAL is seeking a Bioenergy Project design Engineer. The
purpose of the position is to develop and participate in the commercial
scale-up phases of Total's bioenergy projects.
In conjunction with the other Total teams working in the same field, the
bioenergy project design engineer is responsible for qualifying and defining
the design of commercial and semi-commercial projects involving biological
processes, biofuels and bioproducts. These commercial projects are intended
to span the entire sector, from raw material feedstock (biomass) to the
production of marketable products such as diesel fuel, jet fuel, polymers
and base stock.
The project design engineer also organizes the selection of technical
solutions that meet performance, reliability, environmental and economic
criteria for commercial application in the project's design. He coordinates
the different professional fields involved in the development project's
various blocks (chemical process, biotechnology, technologists, HSE,
economics, CO2), as well as water resources and liquid and solid effluent
treatment and removal.
Main responsibilities are:
- Perform technical and economic feasibility studies for projects developed to implement Gas & Power's strategy.
- Conduct and coordinate internal and external development studies to provide management with the information necessary to make decisions on operated and non-operated projects.
- Coordinate with the projects' partners and potential financial backers.
- Interface extensively with the department's other project design engineers.
- Optimize the technical performance and technical and economic parameters of project design (capex, opex, energy efficiency).
Operating responsibilities are:
Project design and development
- Handle client relations during the initial design phase then throughout the development study, including design specifications, budget, periodic approvals, etc.
- Participate as needed in studies or audits of investment opportunities (due diligence), looking at technical and budget issues and the implementation schedule, by prioritizing parameters and delegating sections of the specifications to various internal or external specialists.
- Perform project design studies per good practice and G&P's rules on design, safety and the environment or explain the reasons for departures from the norm.
- Issue an end-of-study recommendation for an optimized development plan that includes and outlines technical issues, the implementation plan and execution and expenditure schedules, as well as identify the associated uncertainties and risks.
- Participate where necessary in project approval committee meetings and project reviews.
In the area of operational projects:
- Provide technical support for Total's operational units.
- Participate in the scale-up and process development phases of Total's pilot projects and semi-commercial units
