Full Professor of Systems Sciences
(based on a six year contract in accordance with applicable employment laws; the position is renewable thereafter on a permanent basis, the vacancy should be taken up in 2009)



Background and Environment:

The new chair in systems sciences at Graz University (Austria) will shape the formation of a new systems sciences unit and be responsible for the selection of appropriate personnel. She/he will find an environment at Graz University, where:

  • Researchers from a broad range of research groups in the natural, social and environmental sciences, each of sufficient critical mass, would be glad to link up to this unit and contribute their respective competences.
  • Highly motivated students in environmental systems sciences, a study programme first established in the early 1990s, facilitate the development of a mutually inspiring working atmosphere.
  • A very active network of environmental systems science graduates can offer contributions and research collaboration based on their current positions in industry, business, or public administration.

Within the School of Environmental, Regional and Educational Sciences, established in late 2007, the new position will be the first chair in the Department of Systems Sciences, Innovation and Sustainability Research.

Responsibilities:

Coordination and direction of activities in research and teaching related to systems sciences, in particular of those activities related to the interdisciplinary study programme in environmental systems sciences. This programme is unique in Austria. Particular focus needs to be placed on the following areas of competence:

  • Strong ability to integrate the methods and subject areas of a very diverse range of disciplines, in particular those of the social, natural, and environmental sciences.
  • Internationally recognized research and the ability to initiate applied research based on interdisciplinary systems sciences.
  • Advanced ability to deal with and, in research and teaching, apply methods from a wide spectrum of systems science methods.

Prerequisites:

Completion of a PhD degree or equivalent and relevant teaching experience. In addition, management competence in gender mainstreaming is expected.
