Technical Officer, The School of Natural Sciences - Earth and Ocean Sciences (Earth Sciences and Biogeochemistry)

The School of Natural Sciences at NUI Galway is student-centered and research-intensive School, and hosts several worldwide-renowned research laboratories and clusters (see http://www.nuigalway.ie/natural_sciences/).

Applications are invited for a full time technical officer role in the School of Natural Sciences. The successful candidate should be an honours graduate in Earth and Ocean Sciences or a cognate discipline.* Candidates with a post-graduate qualification at the level of MSc or PhD are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate for this position will provide general technical, teaching and research support for the Earth Sciences section of EOS and for other disciplines in the School of Natural Sciences (SNS). Desirable skills and experience include: rock and mineral thin-sectioning skills (training can be given); Transmitted Polarising Light Microscopy Skills; Electron and Laser Raman Microscopy Skills; Geochemical Analytical Skills; Fluid inclusion sample preparation and analysis including microthermometry; Experience of working in a third level teaching and research environment; Full driving licence. Specific duties will include: Operation and management of EOS's thin-section and fluid inclusion wafer preparation laboratory. Upkeep and maintenance of teaching, research and museum collections. Maintenance and upkeep of binocular and petrological microscopes. Upkeep and maintenance of UV and Laser raman microscopes, and microthermometric stages in the Geofluids Laboratory. Technical support for undergraduate practicals and fieldtrips, undergraduate and postgraduate field projects including land-based geophysics projects. Provision of laboratory based support to other disciplines in the SNS.

*The recommendations of the 'Report of the Expert Group on University Technician Grade' will apply to the selection process.

Salary:

€39,699 p.a. to €47,722 p.a.
€35,729 p.a. to €42,950 p.a.(applicable to new entrants effective from January, 2011)

(This appointment will be made on the Technical Officer scale in line with current Government pay policy)
