PhD position in greenhouse gas flux measurements on grazed grasslands

Introduction

N2O is an important greenhouse gas emitted from agricultural systems. The Climate and Agriculture Group at Agroscope offers a PhD position in the field of greenhouse gas flux measurements as part of the SNSF project REFGRASS (Towards Representative N2O Emission Factors for Grazing Systems in Switzerland). This PhD will be carried out in close collaboration with a second PhD work focussed on modelling in the same project.

Tasks

  • You plan and perform field measurements on N2O emissions with chamber and eddy covariance techniques on a grazed pasture field with different management and applications of fertilisers.
  • You evaluate the measurement data with available and self-written programs (in R or similar framework)
  • You perform literature surveys and synthesize results on N cycling and emissions from pasture systems
  • You present the obtained results at colloquiums and international conferences
  • You write scientific papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals

Requirements

  • Master or equivalent university degree in environmental sciences, agronomy, meteorology or similar
  • Interest in agro-ecological processes and corresponding experimental investigations
  • Interest in and (basic) experience with micrometeorological and/or trace gas measurement techniques
  • Programming skills (processing of measured large datasets and statistical evaluations)
  • Car driving licence
  • Very good knowledge of English, spoken and written, and preferably some knowledge of a Swiss national language
