Full Professor at the Institute for Development Research, Department of Sustainable Agricultural Systems (DNAS)

As of 1st January 2020, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) seeks to appoint a Full Professor at the Institute for Development Research, Department of Sustainable Agricultural Systems (DNAS). The position is offered in accordance with § 98 of the 2002 Universities Act in the form of an open-ended contract.

The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, the Alma Mater Viridis, conducts research and provides education on all aspects of sustainable development. We combine natural sciences, engineering and socio-economic sciences with the aim to increase knowledge of the ecologically, socially and economically sustainable use of natural resources. With more than 12,000 students and over 2,500 employees, BOKU is one of the leading life science universities in Europe.

Considering its commitment to sustainable development, BOKU has integrated research for development in various disciplines for many years. Ten years ago, this commitment was institutionalized as the Centre for Development Research. To successfully continue this work, the Institute for Development Research (IDR) will be established at the Department of Sustainable Agricultural Systems on 1st January 2020.

The Institute for Development Research (IDR) conducts research and provides education on the sustainable use of natural resources mainly in the Global South, guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Key areas are system analysis and modelling, food and nutrition security, and learning in development processes. The Institute coordinates the Cluster for Development Research (CDR) of BOKU scientists with a particular interest in development research in the Global South. The IDR also coordinates the activities of Austrian universities on SDG2 (Zero Hunger) for the UniNEtZ network. Starting in fall 2019, the IDR will be responsible for establishing the Austria-Africa UniNet, an initiative to strengthen collaboration between Austrian and Afri can scientific institutions.

Profile and expected expertise

From the professor for Development Research, we expect a strong scientific track record in at least one of the three strategic priorities of the IDR:

  • systems analysis and modelling,
  • food and nutrition security,
  • learning in development processes.

In addition, we expect expertise in innovative research and teaching on the sustainable use of natural resources, preferably in the Global South, including experience in the coordination of projects and networks. The research must attract external funding and the candidate must show the ability to work in trans- and interdisciplinary groups. A teaching portfolio related to the research areas and according to BOKU curricula has to be developed. The supervision of Bachelor, Master, and doctoral students is required.

Requirements

  • Teaching authorization according to Austrian University law (venia docendi), or an equivalent subject-relevant academic qualification.
  • Competences in teaching as well as in supervising Master and doctoral students. The candidate is expected to submit a teaching portfolio.
  • Teaching in German and English. For applicants from abroad: we expect you to reach a German level of B1 within a period of two years.
  • Relevant research experience of good international reputation, including experience in national and international networks.
  • Experience in the successful acquisition and management of research and teaching projects.
  • Cooperation with national and international research institutions and with relevant partners from public services and the private sector.
  • Leadership and communication skills to run an internationally successful university research group.
  • Willingness to work at the science-society interface.

Willingness to participate in strategic projects and cooperation programmes of the university.

  • Participation in the self-governance and administration of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna.
