At TU Dresden, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Department of Forest Sciences, the Institute of International Forestry and Forest Products, seeks to fill the

Chair (W3) of Tropical and International Forestry

from 01.10.2020.

The holder of the position will conduct research and teaching in the area and engage in academic self-administration. The tasks of the chair in research cover the socio-economic interrelations and evaluation of man-forest relations in the Global South. The focus is on local dynamics taking into account the diversity of habitats and land-use systems with forests, including agroforestry systems, for the generation of forest products and their contribution to rural development. In addition, an operational understanding of institutions and mechanisms to control such dynamics should be developed. An important reference framework is the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular the integrating Goal 17 "Means of Implementation and Global Partnership“. The focus in teaching is on the coordination and continuous development of the DAAD-funded masters programme "Tropical Forestry" (in English language). Own lecturing contributions are required in this and other study programmes of the faculty for the above-mentioned topics. We expect the collaboration in the "Center for International Postgraduate Studies of Environmental Management - CIPSEM" of TU Dresden as well as the cooperation with the Dresden-based UNU-FLORES Institute of the United Nations University “UNU Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources”. The maintenance and further development of the existing worldwide cooperation with partners in science, teaching, development cooperation, the private sector and politics is also expected. This includes the maintenance of the extensive alumni network of the masters programme "Tropical Forestry".

The candidate should have in-depth knowledge in the dynamics and use of (sub-) tropical forest and possibly agroforestry systems as well as active experience in the analysis of relevant actors, conflicts and governance mechanisms. We are looking for an internationally recognized scientist with high-ranking publications. Research experience in the (sub-) tropics of the Global South, international networking and experience in attracting external funding are required. Taking over courses taught in English needs excellent English language skills. Proficiency in additional languages is an advantage. Experience and the ability for interdisciplinary cooperation as well as the willingness for active cooperation with other subject areas at the faculty and university are also expected. Applicants must fulfil the employment qualification requirements of § 58 of the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG).
