Principal Scientist - Agricultural Mini-Catchment ProgrammeRef: PS/JC/0208/EAR Teagasc, the Agriculture and Food Development Authority, is seeking to appoint a Principal Scientist - Agricultural Mini-Catchment Programme, to manage and provide scientific leadership to a well-resourced, multidisciplinary team. This is a contract position, based at Johnstown Castle Environment Research Centre, Johnstown Castle, Wexford, which is expected to extend over a 4 year period. The Agricultural Mini-Catchment Programme will evaluate the effectiveness of the National Action Programme mitigation measures (S.I. 378 of 2006) which implement the Nitrates Directive. A number of intensively farmed mini-catchments on a range of contrasting soil types will be established in partnership with stakeholders. The effect of changes in farm management practices on the transfer of nutrients from source to water and their impact on water quality will be evaluated. Measurements, modelling and socio-economic studies will be used to evaluate the efficacy, cost effectiveness and economic impact of the measures. Modifications to measures will be identified where evidence indicates that water quality targets may not be achieved. The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent experience in agronomy, soil science, environmental science, hydrology, hydrogeology, hydrogeochemistry or another relevant discipline and will have a proven record of leadership of research teams. The current salary scale for this position is €77,951 (min) to €100,382 (max). Appointments are normally made at the minimum of the scale.
