Lecturer/Senior Lecturer - River Science, Faculty of Science

The University of Auckland invites applications for the position of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in River Science within the School of Environment (ENV) located in the Faculty of Science.

Rivers-related issues and sustainable management of river systems are becoming pronounced in a wide range of arenas in NZ. Especially important in this context is knowledge creation about how rivers work from a physical process perspective. The School of Environment therefore seeks to appoint an enterprising river scientist at the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level to research and teach collaboratively in the area of fluvial processes and the application of associated principles to river management. Preference will be given to an appointment in fluvial geomorphology. We are particularly interested in applicants with a strong background in physical geography, with demonstrated experience in the use of emerging technologies in process measurement and/or remote sensing applications as it relates to physical river processes. Ability to work as part of cross-scale and cross-disciplinary initiatives collaborating with researchers from engineering, ecology or social science and management fields is desired.

Applicants should hold a PhD and possess a strong background in fluvial processes. The position holder will be expected to develop a portfolio of research-led undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervise research students and contribute to teaching in a range of cognate areas within the School of Environment. Evidence of an ability to attract research funding, publish in leading peer-reviewed journals, build research collaborations and a willingness to engage with government and industry is highly desirable.

The School of Environment includes academics from a wide range of backgrounds including ecology, physical and human geography, geology, environmental science and environmental management. Staff within the School are prominent in a range of national and international research programmes involving collaborators in universities, government research institutes and industry, In the 2011 QS World University Rankings, Environmental Science, Geography and Earth Science in the School of Environment were ranked at position 30, 34 and 51-100 respectively in the world.
