The School of Geographical and Earth Sciences seeks to appoint a Professor and Head of School with a deep commitment to supporting and extending the School's strengths in geography and Earth science. At this time of unprecedented societal and environmental challenges, this is also a unique opportunity to set new directions in areas that are strategically important for the School and University including geospatial data science, geo-computation, environmental sustainability, and human-environment relations.

The appointee should have strong and proven skills in leading research and teaching, and championing equality and diversity. They should also have an inclusive vision for the world changing role of Geography and Earth science, and how the School can position itself amidst current and future social and environmental challenges to make the most of these opportunities and lead on national and international initiatives.

The School is interdisciplinary, covering human and physical geography and Earth sciences. It is structured around two strong research groups, Earth Systems Research Group (ESRG) and Human Geography Research Group (HGRG), and collaborates closely with the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC) located at East Kilbride and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies in Dumfries. The ESRG and SUERC submit (together) to REF UoA7 and the HGRG submits to REF UoA14. The School offers undergraduate degree programmes in Geography, Geology and Environmental Geoscience, and MSc programmes in Earth Futures, Environmental Futures, Geoinformation Technology and Cartography, Geospatial and Mapping Sciences, Land and Hydrographic Surveying, Sustainable Water Environments, and an MRes in Human Geography. A new MSc programme in Geospatial Data Science and Modelling will start soon.
