The Department of Geology and Geography in the College of Science and Mathematics invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Geography. Georgia Southern University (www.georgiasouthern.edu), a member institution of the University System of Georgia and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is one of Georgia's premier universities. A residential university serving more than 20,500 students, Georgia Southern is recognized for providing all of the benefits of a major university with the feeling of a much smaller college. Founded in 1906, the University offers more than 100 campus-based and online degree programs at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels through eight colleges. The more than 900 acre park-like campus is located in Statesboro, a classic Main Street community near historic Savannah and Hilton Head Island.

Within this setting, the Department offers undergraduate degree programs in both geography and geology. In addition, the minor in GIS attracts students from a range of disciplines.

Position Description. Reporting to the Department Chair, the Assistant Professor of Geography will conduct research and teach courses in support of our GIScience program. Areas of desired research and teaching interest include, but are not limited to: Big data, Geographic information retrieval, Geovisualization, Quantitative methods, Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI), and Web GIS. The successful candidate will apply GIS in disciplinary research such as environmental geography, health geography, and rural/regional development. The position requires teaching, research, and service responsibilities as well as a PhD in geography or a closely related discipline. The individual selected will participate in teaching core courses in geography, courses in his/her specialty, and undergraduate GIS classes. The position is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment, and the salary and the startup package are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD in geography or a closely related discipline must be completed by the position starting date of August 1, 2014

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous teaching experience (full-time or part-time)
  • Specialty that complements the Department's existing expertise
  • The ability to quickly establish an active research program
  • Evidence of seeking/securing external research funding

Screening of applications begins October 15, 2013, and continues until the position is filled. The preferred position starting date is August 1, 2014.
