School of GeographyPostgraduate taught coursesThe School of Geography currently offers a wide range of taught Masters programmes, each delivered through our internationally renowned research groupings. We offer two MSc programmes through our Global Environmental Change and Earth Observation research group. The MSc in Applied Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing is an innovative inter-disciplinary programme aimed at individuals seeking to develop their knowledge of the subject area in order to enhance employment opportunities within earth observation and GIS communities, consultancies, private and public sectors. The MSc Geographical Information Systems (online) provides a part-time study route for those interested in the application of GIS to real-world problem solving. In academic year 2010-11, we will be offering a suite of exciting new awards. Our Earth Surface Dynamics research group will be delivering a new MSc programme in River Science & River Management. This programme delivers training in river science to bridge the gap between river engineering and the environment. Students are able to apply this understanding to manage rivers within a changing environment. The Palaeoenvironmental Laboratory at the University of Southampton (PLUS) have developed a new MSc programme in Palaeoecology, which combines a core of palaeoecology with GIS and environmental management. Further details on each programme are given below. Applied Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing MSc This programme is an innovative inter-disciplinary programme aimed at individuals seeking to develop their knowledge of the subject area in order to enhance employment opportunities within earth observation and GIS communities, consultancies, private and public sectors. Palaeoecology MSc / MRes The MSc and Masters by Research (MRes) in Palaeoecology are masters level programmes with a focus on palaeoecology and environmental management. The courses combine a core of palaeoecology with GIS and environmental management options available. This provides both an academic focus with transferable skills in GIS and other geographical skills. The courses apply Masters level palaeoecological skills to real world problems such as conservation management. The combination of these specialist skills along with GIS and spatial data analysis is a strong selling point for the degree pathway. River Science & River Management MSc / MRes in River Science These MSc and Masters by Research (MRes) programmes meet an international interest and demand for trained specialists in river science who can bridge the gap between river engineering and the environment. This demand arises due to increasing demands for sustainable solutions to flood and erosion risk management which must also balance the demands for improving and restoring the ecological health of the Worlds Rivers. Central to this is the need to understand how physical river processes create and sustain channel morphologies and physical habitats, and how through the development of models and tools, it is possible to apply this understanding to manage rivers within a changing environment. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) by Online Distance Learning MSc This is a collaborative online programme for part time study from the Universities of Leeds and Southampton. Admission is to Leeds in the first instance, progressing through Leeds or Southampton according to the degree pathway chosen. This innovative MSc programme in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) offers a highly attractive mix of skills enhancement in information acquisition, extraction and management, data analysis, computer modelling and mapping applied to real-world problem solving across key fields such as business decision making, health management, planning and environmental management. In addition, unlike some other GIS courses which take a more theoretical approach, the emphasis of this programme is very much on how to implement GIS techniques in work and other real-world environments. |
