Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Geographical Information Technology

The position below in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Digital Photogrammetry will be filled to realise an exciting new initiative to position Stellenbosch University as the market leader in GIT research application and teaching in South Africa and Africa.

This permanent position will be filled by a person with the necessary academic profile, vision and leadership to act in a direction-determining fashion for the planning of the discipline Geographical Information Technology (GIT) and its research application in geographical sciences.

Duties: Academic leadership in GIT o academic programme development and regeneration o undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in GIT o postgraduate supervision in the application of GIT in human or environmental geographical research o running a productive research programme in GIT application in environmental studies, urban geography and tourism, and related human science disciplines o publication of research results in accredited journals o securing research funding o active participation in all departmental activities and research projects o academic interaction with the community.

Requirements: Senior Lecturer - A doctorate in Geography, GIT or a related discipline. Lecturer - Master's degree in Geography, GIT or a related discipline. Senior Lecturer/Lecturer - An established academic profile in the GIT and/or Geography environment o proven competence as lecturer, postgraduate supervisor and administrator or proven ability as GIT specialist in the industry o a proven record of research and scientific publications in GIT application o sound communication and language skills in English.

Recommendations: A completed doctorate o professional qualifications in GIT and/or experience in GIT application within appropriate disciplines o ability to teach in Afrikaans and English o academic experience o a focus on human-geographical sciences.

Commencement of duties: 1 September 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter
