Senior Lecturer/Lecturer/Junior Lecturer: Geography & Environmental Studies

This permanent position in Geography, in a dynamically expanding department, will be filled by a qualified person with Physical or Environmental Geography as general focus area, and with scope for research and academic specialisation. The person must offer the required academic profile, vision and leadership to act in a direction-determining fashion, for the planning of the Geography discipline and its research application in the Geographical Sciences.

Duties:

  • Academic leadership in Geography with specialisation in Environmental Studies or Physical Geography;
  • academic programme development and renewal;
  • teaching Geography at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level;
  • postgraduate supervision of environmental geographical research;
  • running a productive research programme in a relevant geographical application field;
  • publication of research results in accredited journals;
  • securing research funding;
  • active participation in all departmental activities and research projects;
  • academic interaction with the community.

Requirements:

Senior Lecturer

  • Doctorate in Geography or a related discipline.

Lecturer

  • Master's degree in Geography.

Junior Lecturer

  • Honours degree in Geography.

Senior Lecturer/Lecturer

  • An established academic profile in the disciplinary environment of Geography;
  • proven competence as lecturer, postgraduate supervisor and administrator, or proven ability as Geography specialist in the industry;
  • a proven record of research and scientific publications in a Geography-related research application;
  • sound communication and language skills in both Afrikaans and English.

Recommendations:

All post levels

  • Excellent performance level in the achievement of a Geography-related qualification;
  • ability to teach in Afrikaans and English.

Senior Lecturer/Lecturer

  • Professional or appropriate experience in teaching Geography;
  • at least five years' academic experience;
  • an NRF rating.

Lecturer

  • Doctorate or progress towards one.

Commencement of duties: 1 January 2014
